The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a test for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of the horror genre: Sit down with your significant other and watch Together. The independent film success of 2025 just made its streaming debut on Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like conventional physical horror, but beneath Together exists a deep examination about our choices in loving each other.

An Introductory Film Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together is the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for over ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a particular energy to their characters, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The narrative commences when Tim and Millie move from the big city to the country for her career. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, admittedly, but that’s largely where the cliches end. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their new home, a storm hits, and the protagonists fall into an underground cave. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity begins influencing the pair. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a slow burn fright fest, interspersing elements of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes during something horrific). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and delivers them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and far away from his network of friends. He fears the idea of completely losing his sense of self in another person. This fear is intensified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie refrains from painting Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie confront the type of challenges that arise in long-term unions over a long period. At their core, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these fears of codependency and giving oneself over to another person, the metaphor never feels overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama work together in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Conversely, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could function as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale plant anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply turn to your significant other and state, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can experience today.

Together is streaming on Hulu at present.
