Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost began their trial on this week, facing charges for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that resulted in the nickname “Hammer Gang”.
Global terrorist designation and prosecution case
Earlier this month, the United States designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization together with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist networks.
German prosecutors claim the network was behind attacks on sites in the country and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a meeting point for far-right supporters.
Certain individuals are allegedly accused of employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.
Court proceedings and international connections
Court proceedings involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G. and Paul M, also face charges for attacks in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, around an yearly gathering known as the “day of honour” that draws rightwing extremists from across Europe.
Separately, another German activist, Maja T, is currently on trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis prior to the identical event in 2023.
Historical background and group hierarchy
The former East Germany has long been a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that counter them.
Authorities characterize Johann G. as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, tasked with planning attacks and bringing in new members.
Alongside Paul M, he is accused of organizing instruction courses where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. At depots managed by the suspect, the network allegedly accumulated tools, pepper spray, concealment items and communication devices.
Previous convictions and global responses
A different activist previously active with the organization, Lina E., emerged as a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.
America's terrorist listing makes group members barred from entering the United States, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.
Germany's far-right AfD party applauded the US decision and called on the government in Berlin to take similar action. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.
“The threat posed by the organization has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have already been convicted or remain detained.”
